African Union President Highlights Concerns over Deteriorating Situation in Eastern DRC
The president of the African Union, Azali Assoumani, expressed today his deep concerns regarding the worsening situation in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He emphasized that the current state of affairs is destabilizing the country and emphasized the importance of transforming the DRC into a source of happiness rather than conflict.
Speaking at the Quadripartite Summit of Heads of State and Government on the pacification of eastern DR Congo in Luanda, Assoumani stated that the situation in the region is not only a concern for Africa but also for the international community. He acknowledged the economic and human wealth present in the territory and warned that the destabilization in eastern DRC could have far-reaching consequences for the entire continent.
The acting president of the African Union stressed the need for joint and active efforts to find peaceful and prosperous solutions for the DRC. He emphasized the importance of political, diplomatic, and security solutions tailored to the situation, avoiding duplication of efforts and competition between regional mechanisms.
The summit, attended by high-level representatives from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the East African Community (EAC), the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICRGL), and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), aims to address the need for peace in eastern DRC, where military tensions persist and conflicts arise with neighboring Rwanda.
Azali Assoumani, also the head of state of Comoros, highlighted the rich resources of the DRC but emphasized that the local population continues to live in extreme poverty due to the ongoing conflict. He called for regional blocs to actively contribute to peace, stability, and development in the DRC.
The AU Commission President, Moussa Faki Mahammat, echoed the commitment of the African Union to finding African solutions to African problems. He emphasized the urgency of coordinated efforts among regional organizations to maximize efficiency and resource management. Mahammat underscored the importance of prioritizing political and military initiatives to address the crises in the region and emphasized the need for silence of the guns, especially in the Great Lakes region.
The summit, attended by representatives from various African nations and international organizations, including the United Nations, seeks to establish effective mechanisms for peace in the eastern region of the DRC.
