Employment and Labour Relations Court Judge Hellen Wasilwa has sentenced doctors’ union officials to one month jail term. The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) officials, seven in number have been jailed for one month for contempt of court.
Justice Wasilwa effected the jail term after suspending it on two previous occasions to allow the doctors’ union officials to continue with negotiation.
This comes in after she had asked top chiefs of Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Unions (KMPDU) to call off their job boycott and engage the government in talks. But following the failed attempts by the union officials to resolve the 71-day doctors’ strike and some parties withdrawing from the negotiating table, Justice Wasilwa said that the court had no option but to effect the jail term.
She, however, said that the medics have the right to appeal the ruling at the Court of Appeal
