Over 50 members of the congregation were killed when gunmen suspected of being bandits assaulted St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, the seat of the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The attackers allegedly entered the church during a Sunday morning service on June 5 and opened fire on the congregation.
According to the Nigerian Tribune, more than 50 bodies have been removed from the church, with many more being treated at the Federal Medical Center in Owo.
According to a source, the crowd was caught off guard, and the death toll could grow as some worshippers who were transported to the hospital perished.
He went on to say that the attackers utilized explosives within the church’s compound, but that the majority of the people were hit by gunfire.
The killers are alleged to have departed the site after carrying out the murders, which left a large number of victims dead.
Some dead bodies were soaked in blood in the church, according to graphic photographs and videos released online.
According to a nurse at Owo who spoke to the publication on the condition of anonymity, there were insufficient medical staff on the ground to respond to the wounded at the hospital’s emergency unit, and some of the casualties were transported to a private hospital.
