Following a ceremony of heartfelt tributes, ten persons who had recently died in protests against the UN presence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were buried in Goma on Friday.
The UN Mission for the Stabilization of the DRC (Monusco), which has been operating in the nation since 1999 and is accused of being unsuccessful in combating armed groups, was looted and vandalized by enraged protesters in late July. An official report claims that over a week of protests in at least four eastern towns, 32 civilians and four soldiers have been slain. One of the largest UN deployments ever deployed, Monusco has 14,000 soldiers spread over numerous eastern cities.
Since 2019, pro-democracy organizations and some political authorities have demanded that the peacekeepers leave.
