In retaliation for the invasion and looting committed by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) during the Congo war between the late 1990s and 2003, Uganda has paid the Democratic Republic of Congo $65 million in compensation. Up to nine African nations were involved in this battle, including Uganda and Rwanda, which supported rebel factions in the east of the country’s mineral-rich region.
The news that the DRC Justice Minister had stated during a cabinet meeting on Friday was confirmed on Monday by Apollo Munghinda, the spokesman for Uganda’s Finance Ministry.
In February of this year, the UN’s top court decided that Uganda should pay its neighbor $225 million for a loss of life, $40 million for property damage, and $60 million for harm to natural resources.
Beginning on September 1 of this year and continuing every September 1 for the following four years, the money will be paid out in five $65 million installments.
Although Kinshasa had first wanted $11 billion, Uganda was required to pay $325 million by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
