The unstoppable Karim Benzema was the winner of the 2022 Ballon d’Or, with Sadio Mané coming in second. The 30-year-old, who won on Monday night, became the second African athlete to win the coveted trophy since George Weah’s victory in 1995.

The Socrates Award was presented to the Teranga lion as it departed the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

He is the inaugural winner of the award that recognizes football players’ accomplishments off the field.

Sadio Mané opened a brand-new hospital in his hometown of Bambaly in the Casamance region of western Senegal last year.

He put nearly a million dollars into the construction of infrastructure, including a school, during a short period of time.
