President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced the results of the national census on Monday and noted that Tanzania’s population increased by more than 37% in a decade to reach 61.7 million.

According to the census conducted earlier this year, the country’s population increased from 44.9 million in 2012 to more than 60 million, reflecting a 3.2 percent yearly growth, according to Hassan.

The president stated that as the population grows, more effective systems are required to keep up with “the current issues and current numbers.”

“Such population might not be a big deal for a huge country like ours”, the president said “but it’s a burden when it comes to allocating resources and delivering social services”.

She therefore encouraged to begin planning development projects.

We need to start preparing development projects for these people and make necessary reforms in our policies”.

More than 10 million people currently live in 2 African cities. specifically, Lagos in Nigeria and Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

By 2050, Dar es Salaam, the economic center of Tanzania, will grow to a megacity status. The population is anticipated to grow to 151.2 million in that same year.
