Next year, the government will resume the collecting of road tolls on a few roadways throughout the nation.

One of the revenue-generating proposals in the 2023 budget that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta proposed to Parliament last week was the return of the road toll.

As part of the policy changes promised by the government under the 2022 Budget, the payment of tolls on public roadways was abolished in November 2021.

The minority members, lead by Kwame Agbodza, the minority spokesperson on roads and transportation, applauded this new decision as they discussed the 2023 budget statement on Wednesday.

“We welcome the decision by the Roads Minister to bring back road tolls. We take no pride in saying we told you so. Mr. Speaker, it was populist, unnecessary and they were there shouting we are going to do it because we have e-levy…today they have brought a law here that they want to bring back road toll,” he said.

However, the Minority emphasised that they would only provide their complete support provided the money collected from the toll was used purely for road upkeep.
