As they invaded the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday to protest the results of the February 25 presidential election won by the ruling All Progressives Congress, the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) followed through on their threat (APC).
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the APC was proclaimed the victor of the election by the electoral authority after garnering 8,794,726 votes to defeat Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who received 6,984,520 votes, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), who received 6,101,533 votes.
However, the main opposition party charged INEC with compromising, calling the 2023 election the worst Nigeria had ever seen since democracy was restored in 1999.
Atiku announced the demonstration would continue every day or every other day while speaking at the INEC headquarters.
He asserted, “We are protesting, and we have a right to do so. We still go to court in spite of it. We are in fact making a statement. For a very long time, we shall demonstrate. Either every day or twice a week”.
Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the PDP Chairman, sent a letter of protest to Festus Okoye, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Voter Education and Publicity.
Other PDP heavyweights present at the demonstration included Prince Unche Secondus, the former party’s national chairman, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, the governor of Sokoto State, Kola Ologbondiyan, Daniel Bwacha, and Senator Dino Melaye, among others.
