A TAXI driver testified in court about how a police officer assigned to the Chipata Central Police Station and his wife staged a heist using the cab as a getaway vehicle.
Lazarus Nthele, 29, of Chipata’s Mpezeni Park Township testified in court that sergeant Patrick Mulenga and his wife, Nandi Jere, who are both accused of aggravated robbery, used his car to stage an armed robbery in the city’s East Rises Township.
On April 3, 2021, it is said that Mulenga and Jere, who have denied committed the crime, robbed Gertrude Luo while brandishing knives and taking K30,000.
When the case went to trial before resident judge Mercy Makubalo of the Chipata High Court, Nthele testified that on the day the robbery was staged, he was at the VNT taxi rank when Jere called and asked him how much it would cost to take her to the Jenda area of Chipata, where she was going to see a witch doctor.
