The president’s last mention of passing the reins to a successor came during a prayer and thanksgiving session at the National Mosque in Accra following the party’s National Leadership elections.

Bryan Acheampong, the minister of agriculture, recently made headlines when he asserted that the NPP would never cede power to the NDC and warned that if they attempted any stupidity, the party will equal the main opposition.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has guaranteed party members that he will hand over power to a successor from his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), when his tenure ends in January 2025.

The NPP’s final rally before the keenly anticipated by-election in the Kumawu Constituency of the Ashanti Region is where the president reportedly made those remarks, according to reports.

The pro-government Daily Guide’s front-page headline on its edition of May 22 read, “I’ll hand over power to NPP – Nana.”

Akufo-Addo is hinting that the NPP will win the 2024 election and ‘break the 8’, a slogan the party coined to fulfil its historic aim of gaining a third consecutive term in office under the current constitution, by making this comment.
