The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has said that he would rather be executed than see Ghana legalize the activities of the LGBTQ+ community there.
He explained that, as a Catholic, he would prefer to remain neutral than support efforts to legitimize the actions of the minority group.
“For you all to participate in it, count me out of Ghana because I will prefer to join my maker than to live. That is me I am a Catholic and I will not do anything that will end the world because God says the world is eternal until he comes back, we cannot do that to end the world,” a report quoted him.
According to the article, Alban Bagbin made the remarks at a press event in Tamale that was held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Parliament of Ghana. The event’s topic was “Thirty(30) years of Parliamentary Democracy Under the Fourth Republic; The Journey Thus Far.”
A Private Member’s Bill known as the Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill, or the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021, is now being debated in Parliament.
Sam Nartey George, a member of parliament for Ningo-Prampram, is the bill’s primary proponent.
