After a group of African leaders attempted to broker a cease-fire between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, EWN reports that the warring parties have not changed their positions.
Ramaphosa claimed that the success of the peace talks was due to the fact that at least the warring parties were open to hearing their ideas for putting an end to the conflict.
“We were listened to as we gave an African perspective on the war that’s having negative consequences for our continent. And secondly, we are probably the only group that has engaged the two leaders within a short space of time to put forward a very strong proposal in view that the war must end.”
According to SABCNews, Zelenskyy said to the delegation in Kyiv on Friday that he would entertain peace negotiations provided Russia removed its soldiers from occupied Ukrainian territory. However, Moscow rejected the suggestion.
Before sending the Russian army to Ukraine in February 2022, Putin accused Ukraine and its Western backers of initiating the conflict and acting as aggressors.
