On Wednesday, the Presidency issued a statement on Twitter alerting the public to hoax communications featuring the president asking money.
According to the presidency, the president didn’t ask for any money or approve of any payments or agreements with outside parties.
This holds true regardless of how the request was made—on a website, in an advertisement, on social media, in an email, a letter, a text message, or over the phone.
The Presidency withheld further details about the scams’ nature but advised anyone who received correspondence of this kind from the president or the Presidency to break off all contact with the con artists going forwards and report the incident to law enforcement, particularly if money was transferred to the con artists.
In South Africa, impersonation fraud and cybercrime are on the rise. The nation is on the verge of becoming the continent’s epicenter of cybercrime.
