Following remarks made by President Akufo-Addo during a visit to flood-affected communities, a number of celebrities have joined a cross-section of Ghanaians in criticizing the president’s remarks.
In a speech to some of the areas that were severely impacted by the floods brought on by the Akosombo Dam spill, President Akufo-Addo reassured the afflicted communities of his administration’s commitment to resolving the issue.
In his speech, the president stated, “I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and are suffering, and it is my responsibility to try and help. Because, if it is a question of counting who votes for me and who doesn’t vote for me, then I shouldn’t be here because you don’t vote for me. But that is not my concern. And, in any event, one day you will vote for me and my party.”
Some members of the public did not agree with the president’s remarks, believing they lacked compassion given how terrible the flooding problem is.
They have contended that in this situation, the president should not have remarked on the voting.
