X, formerly known as Twitter, has finally compensated its employees who were terminated from the company’s African headquarters in Accra, Ghana.
In a statement released on Sunday, Agency Seven Seven, the legal representative of the affected staff, announced that they had successfully negotiated a fair settlement and repatriation expenses for former employees of Twitter Ghana Ltd.
The employees were dismissed in November 2022 following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the social media platform in October of the same year, which led to a decision to reduce the workforce by half.
Facing the threat of legal action for failing to provide the owed redundancy payments, the employees received less than a month’s notice before their termination, and subsequent efforts to secure their rightful compensation proved challenging.
According to Ghanaian employment law, redundancy payments must be provided following negotiations with affected employees, serving as a crucial safeguard against the financial hardships caused by mass layoffs.
Many of the affected individuals had relocated from neighboring countries to work at the Ghana office, and the prolonged battle for compensation took a toll on their mental well-being and financial stability.
Elon Musk’s workforce reduction decision resulted in 6,000 global job losses, with the rationale cited as the need to streamline costs.
