Human rights activists in the Sudanese capital reported on Friday that seven civilians lost their lives in an artillery attack targeting a neighborhood situated south of Khartoum.
According to the South Belt Emergency Room, a humanitarian organization representing the Mayo, Al-Nahda, and Al-Azhari neighborhoods, the fatalities occurred as a result of three artillery shells striking Squares 1, 3, and 4 in Al-Nahda.
Although the statement did not specify the origin of the shelling, it highlighted that the area has been under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023. The South Belt neighborhoods have frequently experienced artillery fire, leading to casualties.
Compiled by humanitarian activists, the emergency room’s statement confirmed that the victims included women and children, with injuries ranging from severe to minor. The wounded were transported to Bashaer and Al-Raqi Hospitals.
Furthermore, the statement identified a female healthcare worker, her mother, and children, including a South Sudanese national, among the deceased.
The neighborhood was subjected to shelling on December 6, 2023.
Since mid-April, conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF erupted in Khartoum before spreading to several states across the Darfur, Kordofan (western), and Al-Jazeera (central) regions.
