President Akufo-Addo has forwarded a petition seeking the removal of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyabeng to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

The petition, dated April 30, 2024, was submitted to the President by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu and relayed to the Chief Justice on May 6, 2024.

The petition alleges several violations, including infringement of citizens’ rights through arrests and detentions, breaches of the right to information, and improper appointments of personnel within the Special Prosecutor’s office.

In accordance with Article 146 of the Constitution, the Chief Justice is currently assessing whether there is a prima facie case to establish a committee for Mr. Agyabeng’s potential impeachment.

Sources suggest that the issue may be linked to a contentious press conference held by Mr. Agyabeng, where he accused judges of conspiring against him.

Martin Amidu contends that Mr. Agyabeng’s remarks about the judiciary constitute abuse and bring the institution into disrepute.

The impeachment process follows reports that the Special Prosecutor refused calls to resign and instead publicly aired his grievances.

Amidu further claims that Mr. Agyabeng abused the rights of individuals such as Cecilia Dapaah and Prof. Frimpong Boateng through their arrests.

He also alleges a violation of the right to information, citing a request by Mr. Agyabeng for appointment letters and salary details of all OSP staff to be provided on a pen drive, and raises concerns about the appointment of personnel to the office.
