The United Nations has raised concerns that heavy rains and flooding are severely disrupting aid deliveries to Sudan, Chad, and South Sudan.
The situation is particularly alarming in Sudan, where over half the population is facing critical levels of hunger as the humanitarian crisis worsens.
Though some aid trucks have reached Darfur, flooded and muddy roads are creating significant obstacles. “We need sustained and expanded access to scale up assistance, save lives, and prevent famine from spreading,” said WFP Sudan spokesperson Leni Kinzli.
The rains have exacerbated the displacement crisis fueled by the conflict between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which began in April last year. More than 317,000 people have been affected by the floods, with 118,000 displaced. Sudan is also battling a cholera outbreak caused by the flooding and contaminated water.
Since the conflict began, thousands have died, and nearly eight million people have been forced to flee their homes.
