The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially cleared 13 candidates to contest in the 2024 presidential elections.
Following a rigorous vetting process, the EC confirmed candidates from various political affiliations, including those from major parties as well as independent contenders. This announcement comes after months of political campaigning and qualification checks to ensure all candidates met the necessary criteria.
Among those disqualified is Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention, who had pledged to end the nation’s political duopoly.
Notable among the approved candidates are Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former president John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Both are expected to campaign on promises of economic reforms, infrastructure development, and enhanced social services.
In addition to these familiar figures, several newcomers from smaller parties and independent platforms have emerged, offering fresh perspectives and aiming to challenge the political status quo.
The EC, in a press release issued on Friday, September 20, emphasized that the selection process was carried out with full transparency and fairness. Candidates were required to submit comprehensive documentation, including financial records, citizenship proof, and nomination forms, all of which were thoroughly reviewed.
The EC also urged all candidates to run peaceful campaigns and adhere to electoral regulations to ensure a smooth and democratic election process.
“Following the successful conduct of the Filing of Nominations from the 9th of September to the 13h of September, 2024, the Commission instituted a thorough examination of the Nomination Forms submitted by the Candidates to ensure conformity with requirements as set out in law,” the statement said.
As the campaign season kicks off in full swing, political analysts predict a heated race, especially given the current economic challenges and growing public dissatisfaction with governance.
