Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi urged the international community to impose sanctions on Rwanda for allegedly “destabilizing” the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.

He accused Rwanda of backing the M23 rebel group, which has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing over 7 million people within the DRC.

Tshisekedi cited UN reports suggesting that between 3,000 and 4,000 Rwandan troops are operating in Congo alongside M23. He also called on the UN to intensify efforts in implementing the recommendations of the global coalition against the Islamic State, warning that terrorism is taking root in Africa.
