Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has died at Ridge Hospital in Accra. The circumstances surrounding her death have not been made public.

A family source confirmed the news on Tuesday, October 29, disclosing that Donkor passed on Monday, October 28.

Known for her vibrant and steadfast advocacy for farmers’ and women’s rights, Akua Donkor was a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics. As the head of the GFP, she frequently captured public attention for her bold, grassroots approach to social and economic issues affecting the underrepresented.

Donkor’s political career included multiple presidential bids, with her most recent attempt placing her third on the ballot for the 2024 election. Her untimely passing closes a distinctive chapter in Ghana’s political landscape, marking the end of an era.

Her journey in politics began when she was elected Assemblywoman for Herman. Her first bid for the presidency was in 2012 as an independent candidate, but she was disqualified by the Electoral Commission for not meeting eligibility requirements. Although disappointed, she chose to support Progressive People’s Party candidate Papa Kwesi Nduom instead of pursuing legal action.

In 2016, Donkor faced another setback when her party headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, was destroyed by fire. Despite these challenges, Akua Donkor remained a dedicated voice in Ghana’s political scene, determined to serve her country.
