A lightning strike killed 14 people and injured 34 others during a prayer service held in a makeshift church at the Palabek refugee camp in northern Uganda, according to police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday in Lamwo district, where the victims had gathered inside a metallic structure for the service. No fire broke out as a result of the strike, Mr. Rusoke confirmed.
The Palabek refugee camp, which shelters over 50,000 people, predominantly hosts refugees from South Sudan. Deadly lightning strikes are a frequent occurrence in Uganda, especially during the wet season.
Police have yet to release the identities of the victims.
