John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed deep disappointment over the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), calling it a national embarrassment.
The four-time AFCON champions endured a poor qualifying campaign, losing three matches and drawing the other three, finishing last in Group F with only three points.
This marks Ghana’s first failure to qualify for the tournament in two decades, with the last occurrence being in 2004.
The team’s underwhelming performance, culminating in a 2-1 loss to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium in their final qualifier, has drawn sharp criticism and left many Ghanaians disheartened.
“Everything has broken down. Even the Black Stars, which gives us joy, have been torn to shreds,” Mahama said during his campaign tour of the Eastern Region.
