Former First Lady Grace Mugabe today covered her head and face with a blanket as she was shepherded by Singaporean diplomatic officials at Gleneagles Hospital where her husband Robert Mugabe passed away early today.
Mugabe was 95 years old. He was removed from power by his own military in November 2017 and replaced by his longtime right hand man Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In the pictures released by a British publication, Grace Mugabe was surrounded by family and her daughter Bona when she visited the Singapore exclusive hospital.
The 55 years old former strong woman of Zimbabwean politics was also accompanied by Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Singapore Claudius Farai Nhema.
With a blue shawl covering her, she left the funeral home after her husband’s death at 10.40am Singapore time on Friday.
The Mugabe’s daughter Bona Mugane-Chikore and a woman believed to be Grace’s sister, were at the funeral chapel.
Adam Molai, a businessman married to Mugabe’s niece Sandra Mugabe, said the former Zimbabwean strongman who ruled from 1980 to 2017 was surrounded by family as he passed away this morning.
Molai further said Mugabe died of old age and not cancer as initially thought.
Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa today declared his predecessor as a national hero and advised that the nation will go through a period of mourning.
Speaking at a press briefing held at State House on Friday evening, President Mnangagwa said funeral and burial arrangements will be advised in due course.
