Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, has said passengers of short-distance commercial vehicles aka ‘Trotro’ will soon pay fares through the mobile money platforms.

He made this promise based on the smooth rollout of the Mobile Money Interoperability service which allows for the transfer of funds among different mobile money accounts with different networks to bank accounts and vice versa as well as linking mobile or bank accounts to biometric payment card accounts (ezwich).

Speaking to Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM yesterday, Bawumia said Ghana is the first African country to roll out the Mobile Money Interoperability service which has made it possible and convenient for Ghanaians to send and receive money without going to the banks.

Bawumia said he “believes this service will make it possible very soon for passengers to pay for their fares through the Mobile Money.”

The Mobile Money service has become arguably the most convenient way of financial transaction in Ghana where the formal and informal sectors of our economy have been provided with an equal safe reliable platfrom.

Statistics show that there are more Ghanaians with Mobile Money accounts than Bank accounts simply because Ghanaians believe the service is super convenient ad safe.
