Former Central Regional Minister reportedly dead

The former Central Regional Minister, Ama Benyiwa-Doe, has passed on at her Tema residence, an aide has confirmed.

Benyiwa-Doe, a former MP, died Sunday (19 September) following a brief illness, the family said.

“Yes, Auntie Ama has passed. She has not been well for sometime. She will be on and off and recently she took ill seriously and we did our best to give her the best health care… Yesterday [Friday], she had to go and rest in her room but after an hour she was uncomfortable so we had to rush her to the hospital and passed. She was 73,” Accra-based Citi FM’s website quoted Jerry Kissi-Dei Yeboah, the special aide to Ama Benyiwa-Doe and constituency communication officer for Gomoa West, to have said.

She first entered Parliament in 1993 on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress as MP for the Gomoa West Constituency in the Central Region. She subsequently lost the seat in 1996 to an NPP candidate.

Benyiwa-Doe also served as National Women Organiser for the NDC and a member of the Council of State .
