Two lecturers at the University of Abuja have been fired amid allegations of sex for grades.
According to the Nigerian news portal, the Guardian, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na-Allah, verified this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in New York.
“Female students needed to be protected,” said Na-Allah, who was in the United States for a two-day visit to meet with the University of Abuja Alumni Association, USA branch, to collect support for the institution.
According to him, any act of wrongdoing by university employees towards students will not be tolerated.
“Since becoming vice-chancellor, I’ve fired two professors.”
“We cannot allow our pupils’ life to be damaged because the majority of abusers do the same to their victims.”
“It was distressing to see some instructors, who are supposed to be protecting female students, become one of their difficulties,” the vice-chancellor stated.
“As I speak, a committee set up to solve the situation is doing multiple inquiries,” he told NAN.
Sex in exchange for grades is a hot topic in universities around the world. According to a February 2022 study by Emmanuel Akinsuroju Oluwatosin of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, the Nigerian situation appears to be the worst.
His study examines cases of sexual harassment against Nigerian students, as well as how it affects educators.
