According to Kenya’s electoral agency, a current audit of the country’s voter rolls has revealed the identities of roughly 250,000 deceased voters.
Over 226,000 persons were registered using documents that did not belong to them, resulting in nearly half a million extra voters having duplicate records.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said in a statement that others had registered with fraudulent documents, affecting more than a million people.
The IEBC chairman, Wafula Chebukati, said the commission will delay certifying the final register for publishing due to the “application of the preliminary audit findings.”
The commission had previously stated that the voter register will be published on or before June 9th, but that date has now been pushed back to June 20th.
The firm hired to do the audit is attempting to address the findings of KPMG.
In Kenya, electoral irregularities have resulted in fatal violence in previous elections. The elections for this year will take place on August 9th.
David Mwaure, George Wajackoyah, Raila Odinga, and William Ruto are the four presidential candidates that have been cleared to participate in the election.
