Three members of an opposition group, including its national coordinator Fonike Mangue, also known as Oumar Sylla, have been detained by Conakry authorities.
The arrests happened on Tuesday during a news conference organized at the coalition’s headquarters with a goal of restoring constitutional order.
The National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC), which recently vowed to stage a protest against the military coup that ousted former president Alpha Condé, is being led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya.
The group vowed to keep up the struggle for democracy in a statement following the arrests.
The FNDC is a sentinel for democracy, and we have made the decision to fight for a restoration of the rule of law, according to Ibrahima Diallo, the organization’s operations officer.
We are going to fight this struggle, and this fight will be led by the people of Guinea, said Abdoulaye Oumou Sow, a member of the FNDC, “now that we know that we are no longer in a rule of law, that there is no longer an open door for conversation, that we perceive that we are in a dictatorship. And we urge the populace to continue their efforts until Guinea achieves democratic virtue.
The FNDC coalition organized a multi-month campaign of mobilization against the ousted president Alpha Condé in September.
Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, the leader of the military junta, has promised to cede control to elected citizens within three years.
At a meeting on Sunday in Accra, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) rejected this deadline without levying additional sanctions against Guinea, which is already expelled from the group’s committees.
