According to the U.N. and an aid organization, at least seven people, including children, were killed by flash floods brought on by seasonal torrential rains in Sudan’s western Darfur area on Sunday.
According to the General Coordination for Refugees and Displaced in Darfur, heavy rains began late on Friday in the Kass locality of South Darfur region.
A pregnant mother and two boys, ages 2 and 8, were among the dead, according to the group.
It stated that at least 100 homes in refugee camps had collapsed or suffered partial damage.
Since the start of the rainy season in June, South Kordofan, White Nile, and Kassala provinces have seen significant rainfall and flooding that has affected around 6,250 people, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Typically, the rainy season in Sudan lasts through September.
More than 80 people were killed by flooding and torrential rains last year, which also submerged tens of thousands of homes around the nation.
