The 10-year anniversary of Atta-Mills’ passing is in 2022.
Atta-Mills’ brother is upset about improvements to his tomb contrasting activities on the 10th anniversary day
The Atta-Mills Institute (AMI) is not authorized or sanctioned by the family of Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, a former president of Ghana.
The institute, which is being led by Koku Anyidoho, a former advisor to the late president, does not, in the family’s opinion, reflect the ideals of the late former leader and is instead being employed as a weapon to foment discord.
At a public lecture to commemorate Prof. Mills’ passing on the tenth anniversary, the head of the Mills family and the late president’s brother, Dr. Cadman Mills, made these remarks. He also said that the Asomdwee Park, where Prof. Mills was laid to rest, had been renovated solely to benefit an organization and its “pay masters.”
Therefore, Dr. Mills declared that the Mills family will investigate all legal options to halt the AMI’s activities.
“Asomdwee Park and the construction there… I apologize for using such a strong word, but to say it is vulgar. There, I didn’t recognize Fiifi. Everything in the Asomdwee Park revolved around them (AMI and their paymasters).
“They promoted themselves, their institute, and their paymasters by using this’refurbishing’ to do so. Fiifi did not advocate for that. Self-promotional persons infuriated Fiifi.
“Atta Mills Institute is being used to foment discord, stir up debate, and promote oneself.
“The family has decided that we will contact our solicitors to make sure that they explore all options to stop the Atta-Mills institute,” he said. “In my capacity as the oldest living sibling of Professor John Evans Atta Mills, as the person who Professor Mill designated in his Will to be the executor and also the custodian of his legacy, and now in my capacity as the ‘Ebusuapayin’ (family head),” he added.
In a statement delivered on her behalf, Ernestina Naadu Mills, a former first lady of Ghana, said that despite all the political vilifications John Atta Mills endured, he never wavered from his high beliefs.
She clarified that she knows that future generations would make accurate judgments about his legacies because of this.
Ten years have passed since I last had Fiifi—my husband, my companion, and my confidante—in my life. Up until a higher national duty came calling, our existence was rather tranquil and private.
“Suddenly, we found ourselves in the spotlight, which brought with it opportunities and difficulties. Fiifi was frequently pounded and injured on the political battlefield, yet he remained true to his personal ideals of honesty, simplicity, and unwavering respect for everyone—qualities I admired in him.
“Fiifi saw the opportunity to serve at the highest levels of government as a chance to improve Ghanaian politics. I think future generations will think highly of him in this regard. For all the sacrifices dad had to make, that is my solace, she added.
The state formally marked the 10th anniversary celebration at the commissioning of the renovated Asomdwee Park, the location of his mortal remains’ burial.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Bawumia, and Koku Anyidoho, whose non-profit organization, the Atta Mills Institute, or AMI, convinced the government to renovate the Park, all attended.
A few hours after the state’s remembrance finished, John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress, and the Atta-Mills family conducted their own event in the park.
