Starting in August, Rwandan primary school teachers will receive a pay increase of 88 percent.
This is a component of the national incentives designed to raise teachers’ living standards.
The country’s education ministry said on its official Twitter page on Monday, August 1, that secondary school teachers will also enjoy a 40 percent wage boost under these new amendments.
According to the communiqué, certificate holders in the teaching profession will henceforth earn a starting net salary of 50,849 FRW (Ksh.5,856) rather than the present starting salary of Ksh.5,856.
“The salaries for Head Teachers, Deputy Head Teachers, and support staff working in public and government-aided schools have also been revised upwards. These decisions come into force from the payment of the teacher salaries of August 2022,” the statement added.
The New Times newspaper in Rwanda states that over 1000 teachers leave their profession each month in quest of greater welfare, despite the country’s March 2019 decision to increase teacher pay by 10%.
The new wage increase is a component of a package that also includes incentives to enhance the welfare of teachers and advance the standard of instruction in general education and TVET programs at public and government-aided schools.
