After more than 80 alleged participants in a gang rape appeared in court on Monday, tensions in South Africa were still high on Friday.

The local illicit miners are to fault, according to the authorities.

A group of illegal miners almost dodged an irate mob on Friday morning before the police intervened and removed them from the area.

Local Ward Councillor Kabelo Matlou criticized the police’s inaction.

“We are fighting not just for zama-zamas (illegal miners, ed. ), but also for all of crime. We need our police to get up. Our police force needs to do better “he declared.

Following the unrest on Thursday, tensions in Krugersdorp were still high on Friday.

The authorities have not yet formally accused any of the gang rape suspects.

According to the police, they are still examining DNA evidence to connect some of the suspects to the rapes.
