Sen. Adamu Abdullahi, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), may not serve out the remainder of his term since machinations to have him ousted and replaced with a Northern Christian have already started.
APC governors and other stakeholders appear to want Adamu replaced with a Christian from the North Central, and this may happen during the upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the ruling party, which is scheduled for September.
In March, Adamu won the position of APC chairman with the support of President Muhammadu Buhari, despite the fact that APC governors had backed Tanko Al-Makura, a former governor of Nasarawa State.
The ongoing financial audit, the failure to pay staff salaries, and the party’s inability to satisfy other financial responsibilities, according to a member of the National Working Committee (NWC), were already causing alarm, the Saturday Sun said.
He claimed that APC governors are considering replacing Adamu with a Christian from one of the six North Central States because they are concerned about the effects of the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Bola Tinubu, the party’s presidential candidate, is in favor of any effort to placate Christians, the source said, adding that Buhari had not been briefed because of concern that he might not back the proposal.
He stated, “Akume is Tinubu’s guy, and other suitable names are being sought after to be put forward to President Buhari for consideration. I’m not sure if Buhari will accept the change.
If you recall, Buhari personally pushed on the selection of Adamu. The President is also aware of the discontent among APC’s Christian leaders. The President might well agree to it in the name of harmony and inclusivity.
As soon as NWC releases a date for the NEC meeting, these problems will pick up steam. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the party’s nominee for president, is likewise in favor of any action that will appease Christians.
“It might work if Tinubu decides to personally present it to President Buhari. If you recall, Adamu opposed Tinubu’s bid for office. Without the NWC’s approval, he was the one to declare Ahmad Lawan as the APC’s consensus candidate for president.
That didn’t sit well with Tinubu, who frequently voiced his anger to governors and other party leaders. He hasn’t requested that Adamu be replaced, but if it happens, he won’t object.
“However, Tinubu is not driving this. He won’t, however, oppose anything that will increase his prospects of winning the presidential election the following year.
