Following the declaration of Deputy President William Ruto as the winner of the presidential race by Kenya’s electoral body on Monday, chaos broke out in Kisumu, a stronghold of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.
In the western city, irate protestors blocked highways with burning tires and were met with tear gas by the police. The chairman said that Ruto earned 50.49% of the vote and Odinga received 48.85%.
However, confusion arose just before the announcement when the vice chair and three other commissioners of the electoral commission informed journalists they could not support the “opaque nature” of the last stage of the process.
