In the just-completed elections, a Kenyan election official in charge of a constituency collapsed and passed away on Monday.
Geoffrey Gitobu passed away at a hospital close to the electoral body’s offices in Nanyuki town, in central Kenya, after collapsing there.
In the Kirinyaga region of central Kenya, he was in charge of the elections in the Gichugu constituency.
Before spending the weekend with his family in Nanyuki and returning to work on Monday, Mr. Gitobu had not reported feeling ill.
The deceased was scheduled to return to his Kirinyaga base on Wednesday, according to County Returning Officer Jane Gitonga, the BBC reports citing the Star daily.
Days prior to the official’s passing, another officer in charge of a constituency in Nairobi, the nation’s capital, was tortured and killed after going missing from a tallying facility.
Wafula Chebukati, the chairperson of the electoral commission, had earlier claimed that officers were being threatened and intimidated in relation to the general election on August 9.
