Jose Eduardo dos Santos, the former president of Angola, will be laid to rest on Sunday in Luanda, the government confirmed in a statement. He passed away in a Spanish clinic last month.
The announcement seen by AFP on Wednesday read: “His Excellency Jose Eduardo dos Santos, former president of the Republic of Angola, will be buried in Luanda on Sunday, August 28, 2022, at 10 am.”

The former president of state, who reigned without sharing from 1979 to 2017, passed away on July 8 at the age of 79 in a Barcelona clinic. He was accused of stealing the nation’s wealth for the advantage of his family and friends.

His widow and some of his children were at odds with the Angolan government, which sought to return the body for a national funeral.
The 44-year-old “Tchizé” dos Santos, a daughter of the former president’s first marriage, requested a family funeral in Spain, where Mr. dos Santos has resided since 2019. She claimed that the Angolan government intended to use her father’s funeral as a political ploy ahead of elections that are anticipated to be close for the ruling party (MPLA).

On Saturday, August 20, his remains were flown back to Spain as a result of a Spanish court decision.
