The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has guaranteed that the election results in 2023 cannot be tampered with.
The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), according to INEC, is designed in such a way that it prohibits the manipulation of results during electronic transmission.
On Tuesday in Abuja, during a panel discussion at a two-day workshop organized by the National Peace Committee (NPC) led by former Head of States Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) and The Kukah Centre, Prof. Mohammad Kuna, the special adviser to INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, provided the assurance.
The role and impact of digital technologies in facilitating peaceful elections in Nigeria was the workshop’s focus.
Speaking, Kuna said, “Due to the design of the BVAS, the results of the uploaded polling units (PUs) cannot be changed. The machine cannot be retrieved once it has been transmitted because it was not made to modify the photographic results that were uploaded and sent to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
An electronic tool called a BVAS is used to read Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and verify voters.
Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, who also spoke, advised INEC to “stress test” the BVAS and other electronic devices that will be used to conduct the elections.
