To stop the shutdown of more than 50 radio stations and television channels in the nation, two organizations in Nigeria on Wednesday filed a complaint against the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and President Muhammadu Buhari.
In Nigeria, there has been an uproar over the suspension of 53 radio and television stations that was recently announced.
The National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) head, however, is adamant that this legislation is “political-free.”
He added that the broadcasters in question had missed the deadline for renewing their licenses during a news conference last Friday in Abuja.
He said that in altogether, they owed more than six million euros. He told them two days to make good on their debt or stop transmitting.
After receiving harsh criticism, the National Broadcasting Commission ultimately decided to grant more time to the affected media, which are currently still broadcasting.
Two organizations filed a lawsuit on Wednesday to stop them from being shut down, claiming that doing so would restrict the freedom of speech and information for millions of Nigerians.
