Ramon Abbas, called Hushpuppi, is scheduled to be sentenced on September 12th, according to confirmation. The Central District of California, Los Angeles United States Attorney’s Office confirmed this.
In answer to a question from Channels Television via email on Friday, August 26, Thom Mrozek, the court’s director of media relations, disclosed this.
Originally set for February 14, the sentencing was later delayed to July 11 and then again to September 21 of this year.
When Hushpuppi’s sentencing date was specifically requested, Mrozek said that Hushpuppi had long since entered a guilty plea last year and would be sentenced later this year.
“Mr. Abbas is currently scheduled to be sentenced by a federal judge in Los Angeles on September 21,” he said.
Keep in mind that Hushpuppi, 39, was detained in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), in June 2020 together with 12 other people on suspicion of hacking, impersonation, scamming, banking fraud, and identity theft. He was then extradited to the US for trial.
Following his detention in a special operation known as “Fox Hunt 2,” where he was suspected of scamming 1.9 million victims out of N168 billion, the UAE police outlined his extradition to the US.
In July 2021, he entered a guilty plea to the charges, and a custody order was issued.
According to court documents, he risks 20 years’ imprisonment; a 3-year period of supervised release; a fine of $500,000 or twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from the offence”
Mrozek remained mute, in the meantime, on the potential extradition of DCP Abba Kyari, the suspended Head of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team who was charged by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in connection with the Hushpuppi case.
Over a year prior, the court had instructed the FBI to detain Kyari.
“I am unable to offer any comment on the state of Mr. Kyari,” the court official added.
