The results of the election are still being challenged by Angola’s largest opposition. Adalberto Costa Junior, a UNITA presidential candidate, is now pleading with the constitutional court to void the election and order a new one.
The National Electoral Commission announced on Monday that the MPLA, which has been in power the longest and has 124 MPs, had won the election. UNITA received 90 MPs.
“I speak with the hope that both the Constitutional Court and the National Electoral Commission will carry out their duties honestly and with utmost adherence to the law and the Constitution.
that the National Electoral Commission should not be afraid to compare the copies of the results that the political parties have with those that it has in its possession. I reiterate that the MPLA did not triumph in the elections held on August 24 of last year, claimed Adalberto.
The legal battle is still ongoing between UNITA and the Constitutional Court.
The preliminary report of the mission, which included 61 non-governmental organizations and other religious groups, was presented by the Angolan Electoral Observatory on Thursday.
They stated that the “transparency” of the vote was “compromised” by the non-publication of the voter lists.
“We are in a situation where the candidates are questioning and doubting the election results while the citizen already do not believe in the decisions of the electoral commission. The solution is the court. It is a matter of access to justice, but for the citizen, it is a matter of perception. The challenge is before the institutions like the CNE, the court and the political parties, to respond to this context,” said Luís Jimbo, a member of the Angolan Electoral Observatory.
The National Electoral Commission was contacted by Euronews but declined to comment on the election minutes because they were posted at the polling places.
The slightly more than 100 observers noted that there were no issues with the voting processes, especially in urban areas, and that there was a calm atmosphere there.
