After prolonged rainfall in the area, Nigeria is currently experiencing its worst floods in ten years.
According to authorities, at least 20 people perished last week, and more than 300 people have died as a result of flooding occurrences this year.
The National Emergency Management Agency estimates that half a million individuals in 27 states have been impacted by the floods.
According to the agency, hundreds have been hurt and about 100,000 people have been forced to evacuate.
Two dams have started to flood, and the disaster management organization is predicting “severe implications” in the following weeks.
Nigeria, which has a population of slightly over 206 million, is the most populous nation in Africa.
The destruction of thousands of hectares of crops by floodwaters has heightened concerns about an interruption in food supplies.
They submerged crops all over the country’s northern area, which provides much of its food.
Concerns have been made that this may further disrupt supplies that have already been hampered by armed conflict in the northwest and central regions.
Due to “excessive rainfalls,” the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency expects that there will be more floods than there were in 2021.
