Isaac Boateng, a Ghanaian employee, is said to have had his throat slit by a Chinese national in Kweikuma, a town in the Sekondi-Takoradi municipality in the Western Region.
The Chinese firm the offender works for has been hired to build structures near to the Ghana Navy flats area units in Kweikuma.
The host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa morning show, Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, was informed by a worker who has been identified only as Boat that the employees were demanding their salaries when tensions erupted.
“We have worked for the whole month and our salaries had not been paid so we had a meeting and asked our Chinese employer why we have not been paid. One of our colleagues went to the Chinese boss to find out what was wrong with the salaries because we have families and we are also owing some people,” he narrated.
“In the heat of the argument, the Chinese boss pulled a flick knife and slashed the throat of our colleague. He has incurred deep wounds, blood traces could be seen everywhere. He has been rushed to the Effiankwanta Hospital and we pray he will survive,” he alleged.
He claims that the construction company employs roughly 80 Ghanaians, each of whom is paid GH$18 per day.
He adds that when his colleague was taken to the hospital for treatment, other military commanders intervened and settled the conflict.
“Some military [officers] intervened and calm was restored later but the foreigner who committed the crime is still walking around. We are in pain and demand justice for our brother. We are about eighty workers here and they pay each of us GH¢18 a day for the tedious construction work are doing here,” he added.
When Connect FM visited the company’s facilities, it was clear that there was a significant security presence, and some employees could be seen waiting in line to receive their paychecks in cash.
Interacting with the company’s management was not successful.
The case has been referred to the Adiembra Police Station in the meantime for more investigations.
Isaac Boateng, the victim and a machine operator for the Company, said he is still receiving medical care.
He said, “I’m still receiving treatment and the Police have taken my statement.
