Following the most recent coup in the nation, a few dozen protesters gathered in Burkina Faso’s capital on Tuesday as West African envoys arrived on an information-gathering trip.
The West African mediator for Burkina Faso was part of the mission, which was led by the foreign minister of Guinea-Bissau. Even if the demonstrators were hostile, the country’s new strongman welcomed the envoys and arranged meetings with traditional and religious leaders.
Protesters marched against ECOWAS in Ouagadougou.
Amadou Sagada declared, “ECOWAS is a shame.
“We want to tell them that the Burkinabe people are standing up and will not let themselves be taken away. What the captain has done is the will of the people and we are behind them”, the high school teacher added.
Three of the members of the regional alliance have experienced five coups in a little more than two years.
In order to push for the restoration of constitutional rule in its junta-ruled member states, ECOWAS devised a contentious strategy that included penalties.
“We are not against their coming (the ECOWAS envoys) to Burkina, protester Bado Nebon said.
“We oppose them because we know what they are coming to do: destroy the country. We are well aware of that, that’s why we’re opposed to that.”
Pro-Russian slogans were sung by demonstrators, who also demanded that France leave the nation. Even in the area of the airport where the west African mission touched down, protesters gathered in defiance of the coup leader’s demand for moderation.
Even though the coup leader had advised moderation to ensure the success of the ECOWAS mission, a strong military presence prevented protesters from gathering near the airport’s main entrance and making Ecowas envoys feel unwanted.
