Thursday’s meeting between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Kenyan President William Ruto was to discuss bilateral cooperation and strengthening the two nations’ economic and strategic connections in relation to regional challenges.

President Ruto is making his first trip to Ethiopia since winning the presidency.

Recall that on September 13, 2022, in Nairobi, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed attended President William Ruto’s inauguration ceremony.

Ethiopia and Kenya are two nations with a history of friendship and cooperation based on shared interests.

Additionally, the visit occurs as the conflict between Ethiopian forces and the Tigray People Liberation Front continues (TPLF).

The ongoing unrest in Tigray is expected to dominate the conversation between the two leaders.

President Ruto had already declared that his administration would actively lead the peace negotiations with the region.

High-level negotiations on the protracted war have already been organized by the African Union in South Africa, with Uhuru Kenyatta, a former president of Kenya, serving as one of the mediators.
