An incident at Atteridgeville, Gauteng, resulted in one soldier dying and two others being hurt, according to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). The unfortunate incident was confirmed by Brigadier General Andries Mokoena Mahapa, Director of Defence Corporate Communication.
According to Brigadier General Mahapa, “The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) confirms that a shooting incident took place in Attridgeville on October 15, 2022, leaving one (1) soldier dead and two (2) soldiers injured, who were then taken to 1 Military Hospital in Thaba Tshwane for additional treatment.
“The soldiers were off-duty when the incident took place.”

The deceased’s name would be made public once the deceased’s next of kin have been notified, he added, adding that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is now looking into the matter. The Chief of the South African National Defence Force, General Rudzani Maphwanya, the Minister of Defense and Military Veterans, Thandi Modise, the Deputy Minister of Defense and Military Veterans, Thabang Makwetla, the Secretary for Defense, Amb. Sonto Kudjoe, and the entire defense family send their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, according to Brigadier General Mahapa.
In the meantime, another SANDF soldier died in Mozambique in July while participating in a cross-border operation.
Senior Sergeant Johan Van Rooyen of the SANDF had been working on Operation VIKELA.
