The mother of the two-month-old baby boy in Imo State whose right hand was amputated, Favour Chikwe, 20, has described how the kid’s father, Confidence Amatobi, made it difficult for her to get the infant the urgent medical attention he needed.
Amatobi shattered the infant’s arm after beating him with a plastic hanger for disrupting his sleep.
The offender, an Amurie, Isu LGA, resident of Imo State who has since hidden, has been identified by law enforcement as sought.
At the Federal Medical Centre, FMC Owerri, the shattered arm was amputated as a result of the tragedy.
Favour, who is from the Idemili Community in Anambra State, revealed she had known the father of her child for four years in an interview with BBC News Pidgin.
Before returning to her aunt’s home in Anambra state, where she eventually delivered birth, Favor claimed that they were both living together.
The young mother claimed that Amatobi visited her at her aunt’s home and then drove her and their infant back to Imo state.
As was previously reported, Favour said that on Friday, October 7, 2022, when the incident took place, she had left Miracle with his father in order to use the convenience.
She remembered how she had to run back after overhearing her infant wailing excessively to find out what was wrong, only to find that his right hand was swollen and bone shattered from the thrashing he had received from his father.
Amatobi said that the infant was obstructing his sleep.
“Upon noticing that he has broken the baby’s hand, he used sticks and rubber bands to bind the broken bones together.
“When l confronted him about what he did, he locked us in the room, to prevent me from telling people about his wicked deed or seek for help. He also collected my phone from me, so that I will not call the neighbours,” she stated.
She described how she was able to transport the infant to local hospitals before transporting him to the Federal Medical Center Owerri, where the amputation was carried out, despite the hospitals’ refusal to treat the infant.
