According to the Buhari-led federal administration, the flood tragedy that has resulted in the loss of lives and livelihoods can only be stopped with regular investments made over a 30-year period.
After the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on October 26, which was presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Minister of Water Resources Engr. Suleiman Adamu said that despite the early warning system in place, numerous capital-intensive initiatives still need to be carried out in the future to prevent the catastrophe.
Floods cannot be averted; instead, the government can only mitigate their effects, according to Adamu, who also observed that the investments needed to prevent them are unachievable during one administration.
He also disclosed that the current administration is already engaged in the creation of a master plan for flood management, which will take at least three years to finish.
The Minister, who claimed that many flood victims disregarded evacuation orders, also attributed the country’s severe flooding this year to soil degradation and tree cutting.
