To better serve the people of Accra, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture intends to start selling food inside its facilities.
To avoid item price inflation, the food will be delivered directly from the farm gate.
Sector Minister Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie said “the ministry itself is going to take its own initiative” when speaking to farmers in Sefwi Wiaso, in the Western North Region.
“We are going to link up with the farm gate so that we make all the arrangements to ensure that we put up kiosks on our compounds at the ministry, specifically for food from here [Sefwi Wiaso] and we are going to give it a lot of publicity,” the minister said.
Inflation for food products was 37.8% in September, while it was 43.6 percent for transportation.
The inflation rate for cereals and cereal products made from crops like maize was 46%.
The minister has previously referred to dealers as greedy due to the rate of food inflation.
According to Dr. Afriyie Akoto, overcharging by merchants was one factor contributing to inflation rather than a lack of food.
